Paddy Ryan is the owner of A Ryan and Son Ltd along with his wife Sue and his two sons Mike and Sam. He learned his trade from his father Anthony Ryan and has worked in the business since 1968 and has now become a Master Butcher.
Sue, Paddy’s wife runs the Bakehouse downstairs in the shop where they produce all of the pies, pastries and quiches by hand and bake them fresh every morning. She has been working in the business since 1984 having previously worked as a home economics teacher. Our new venture into puddings and other baked goods is something Sue has always wanted to do, as a child, she always wanted to be a baker!
Mike is Sue and Paddy’s eldest son and has worked in the business since 2001. He has trained alongside his father and is now responsible for curing all our home-cured bacon products. Mike is very much Paddy’s right-hand man and is taking over responsibility for all areas of the business from ordering, meat preparation, storage and display as well as his own expertise of bacon curing. Mike and Paddy have both been heavily involved in the refurbishment of the new shop.
Sam is Sue and Paddy’s youngest son, he has worked alongside Sue down in the bake house since 2002, helping produce the pies, pastries, and quiches. He is also in charge of pastry production as he makes all of the pastry that we use. Sam is also responsible for the stock control of the pies and baked goods, keeping all the freezers well-ordered and the stock rotated.
Amber is Mike’s wife and has worked in the business since 2014. She is now busy looking after their four children, Jacob, Eliza, Edith and Emily, but is back at work in the Pig & Pie, mainly on bookkeeping, answering the phone and serving in between.
Grant Northwood is Paddy’s Nephew and has worked with us since he left school in 1990. He covers all aspects of butchery as well as serving in the shop when required.
Fiona joined us in October 2021 and works part time in the Bakehouse helping Sue and Sam in the production of the Pies, Cakes and Puddings. Working with us has become a family affair as Jake her son used to work as a Saturday boy for us before he went to university.
Alice has worked with us since we opened the Pig & Pie in July 2021. She works on a Saturday and during the school holidays. She is proving to be a very good baker!
We are delighted to welcome Lee back to the shop. He originally started with us on work experience from school. He joined us full time upon leaving school. He worked for us for 10 years before leaving the butchery trade and serving for 4 years in the British Army. He has spent the last 10 years working in the butchery trade, managing Ensdon farm Butchers for 8 years in Church Stretton.
Magda joined the team in April 2022 working part time in the Pig & Pie on a Monday and Tuesday.
